Organised Chaos is so much more

than just a wine label….

It's kids, friends, family, work, play. It’s the highs and the lows, the good and the not so good. It’s Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. It’s growing grapes, it’s making wine, it’s working hard. It’s life.

Our wine is a celebration of the chaos that is, and a tip of the cap to the chaos that was. They are a reflection of the moments, inspirations and influences, of my journey throughout the world of winegrowing, organised into my personal expression of the wines that Hawke's Bay does best.

We work with growers that share my passion and respect for the land, the Organised Chaos wines are a fresh, vibrant, and textural expression of a modern day Hawke’s Bay.

Please enjoy responsibly.

Winemaker - Hayden Penny

Hayden is a proud Hawke’s Bay local and is excited to bring you Organised Chaos wines.

Organised Chaos was an obvious choice in name as it reflects Hayden’s life, mind and soul.

Having a proven pedigree in organic viticulture, and minimalistic winemaking, Hayden’s passion and respect for the land is undeniable.

When asked what makes his wine so successful, his answer is “Always ask why and why not”. It’s this attitude that has led him to focus on soil health as the way to grow great wines

Having worked throughout New Zealand and around the world including vintages in Hawkes Bay, Marlborough, Australia, Spain, California and Bulgaria. Hayden’s experience and passion brings you the fun, fresh and delicious wine of Organised Chaos.

“In this day and age we cannot let the chaos get the better of us. Embrace it, nurture it, love it”

Sidekick - Crosby Hank Penny

Crosby is Hayden’s right hand man. At home on both the vineyard and at winery, Hayden is not often seen without his old mate next to him. His favourite past times include hunting the local river banks for pheasant and quail, chewing canes at pruning time, sniffing out rabbits and laying around in the sun.

We pride ourselves on working with growers that have the same care and respect for the land as us

Esk Valley - Pinot Gris

Enjoying a maritime influence where the hot dry summer days experience a cooling sea breeze in the late afternoon. The soils are deep alluvial river sands and stone, left behind by the Esk River. Perfectly suited for aromatic whites, it was a no brainer to partner up with Phillip Barber of Petane Wines, to produce our Pinot Gris.

Phillip farms his land with the upmost respect for everything above AND below the ground. The vines are dry farmed with no herbicides used in the vineyard, and he’s currently working through organic registration.

Havelock Hills - Chardonnay & Syrah

This area stretches along the foot hills of the famous Te Mata Peak, and are defined by their North facing aspect and their limestone soils. Some say limestone is the holy grail of wine growing soil, think Champagne, Burgundy and the Southern Rhone.

Slightly off the beaten track, at the Western end of the Havelock Hills is Pakipaki, the home of the Hopes Grove vineyard, of Pieter Koopman. Pieter treats his vineyard with the respect and passion it deserves. No herbicides are used, and an organic canopy spray regime is adhered to.

Mangatahi Terraces – Chenin Blanc, Gamay Noir and Pinot Noir

The Mangatahi Terraces are ancient river terraces formed over thousands of years by the Ngaruroro River, which now sits 30m below the vineyard. These terraces are made up of greywacke and gravel under volcanic, silt based, stony topsoil.

Two Terraces Vineyard is run by husband and wife team, Ian and Linda Quinn. A stunning young vineyard which they planted in 2016 and run meticulously. We are stoked to partner up with Ian and Linda with our Chenin Blanc and Gamay Noir.

Osawa vineyard is a 40Ha, certified organic block, just down the road from Two Terraces. It is here we source our Pinot Noir for our ridiculously popular 'Pet Nat'.
